Let's Go Fishing!

My passion for saltwater fly fishing started when I went on a flats fishing charter in Key West at the age of 13. After having such an amazing experience on this trip, I wanted to learn how to flats fish on the North Fork. During the spring and summer months, I pole my flats skiff in shallow water flats all around the North and South Fork. This type of fishing is visual, you can see the fish swimming in just a few feet of water and you present your lure or fly and actually watch them eat it! During the fall months, I switch to my bigger boat to fish the famed fall run. Striped bass, bluefish, false albacore, and baitfish all start their migration down south for the winter. This migration of all the bait and predatory fish creates a surface-feeding frenzy. This is called a blitz! It is an amazing sight to see, schools of 100’s sometimes 1,000’s of striped bass, bluefish, and albies blitzing on the surface!

SEASONS

APRIL – EARLY JUNE

The season kicks off with fishing the Peconic Bay. This is my favorite fishery, with hundreds of miles of shoreline with crystal clear water with an abundance of striped bass and bluefish. Casting to large fish in just a few feet of water, it is one of the best fishing experiences in the North Fork.

LATE JUNE – AUGUST

As the water temperature rises in the Peconic Bay Estuary, the fish start moving to cooler waters for the summer. We start to fish Shinnecock Bay and Gardners Bay. Shinnecock Bay is the flats fishermen dream with clear ocean-fed water over white sand flats with plenty of Striped bass and Bluefish. Gardners Bay is a diverse fishery, it has rips, rocky, and sandy shorelines. There is plenty of bass and tons of gator Bluefish.

SEPTEMBER – NOVEMBER

As the season runs down Striped Bass, Bluefish, and False Albacore start their migration down south. This is called the Fall Run. During the Fall run, we focus on fishing Gardners Bay, Long Island Sound, and Montauk. This when you see schools of blitzing fish feeding on small baitfish. My favorite part of the fall run is the False Albacore. They are blazing fast and great eyesight making them an awesome challenge on light tackle and fly.
